  1. Louise Said,

Jay and I had our first appointment with Flame last fall when we were 9 weeks pregnant. We saw her every three weeks for the remainder of our pregnancy and always looked forward to our visits with her. She was professional, knowledgeable, and very supportive of our desires to have a natural pregnancy and birth. Our little Matthew was born on May 5, 2008 after 45 hours of labor. Things were moving along fine until I got to 9 cm and stayed there for 7 hours. A friend of mine had had a similar labor in a hospital a few years earlier and ended up with a c-section. I’m sure that had I been in a hospital, there is a very good chance that would have been our outcome as well. But because of Flame’s patience, support and knowledge of the birth process, we were able to have our baby at home just as we planned.

  2. Victoria Said,

My partner and I never knew home birth was an option when we became pregnant in 2004. After a friend told us about her experience with a home birth, she recommonded Flame and that she would be a good fit for us. After meeting her, we knew we had found the person to birth our baby at home. We feel so blessed that Flame birthed both of our children at home with love, honesty, and commitment. We will always think of Auntie Flame as part of our family.

  3. gabrielle and david mclaughlin Said,

Flame has had such an impact on our lives. She was our midwife with our first child born in 2004 and is again our midwife for our second, due june 9th. Because of her commitment to our family we always felt safe and informed on all issues during pregnancy, birth and postpartum. We were so empowered by our experience with her! Her support is constant, and her approach to midwifery is truly authentic. Because of her belief in the homebirth model and it’s community, she has brought us together with other families who have since become our very best friends and the most amazing support system i could have ever dreamed of!! She is an amazing midwife, mentor and a dear, dear friend!! Here is to another successful homebirth to come, with the help of Flame, of course!

  4. Lisa and Bill Long Said,

From our very first meeting with Flame we wanted her to be our midwife! Her presence fills us with so much love, compassion and joy! Flame truly is a remarkable woman and we will always hold her close to our heart. Flame here comes baby # two and we thank you for your love and guidance!

  5. Liz Kriso Said,

Flame is one of the most incredible people I have ever met. She has profoundly effected our lives. We were lucky enough to have her as our midwife for our first child. She was great at explaining any questions that we had during the pregnancy and she really made all of our appointments with her entertaining…shes got a great sense of humor and I always left my appointments with her feeling good about myself and more connected to my partner and babe growing inside of me.
The birth itself went very smoothly, however, my baby had some difficulty at the beginning of his life and so we had to transport him to the hospital. Flame took control of the situation with my baby quickly and professionally. She came with us to the hospital and stayed with us there for almost 10 hours, advocating for us, explaining to us what was going on, smoozing with the staff at the hospital so that they would treat us really well, and taking care of me with her hugs and even bringing me dinner.

  6. Claire Nichols Said,

Flame is an amazing woman and midwife. Period. If anyone in the Boulder area is thinking of having a homebirth, Flame and her soul sister Elizabeth Moore are two women to talk to. I had a homebirth with Elizabeth and have met Flame a few times. I very much respect them both as wise women, keeping the tradition of natural birth alive. They are so into each woman being the source and power of her birth and serve as wonderful guides in the journey of becoming parents. This is no small feat in todays world. Flame and Elizabeth are so very knowledgeable and accomplished, any birth journey with them is safe, transformative, and amazing!

  7. Indra Lusero Said,

Flame is a force of nature. If there is anything you want on your side during childbirth, it’s a force of nature. Plus Flame and Elizabeth will nurture and encourage YOUR wisdom and connect you with YOUR ability to be a force of nature. Flame was there when both of my kids were born, they’re 7 and 5 now, and I know we are all better off for her having been there at the start. We were all empowered and supported and nurtured. The whole experience changed my life.

  8. Katherine Millersdaughter Said,

Flame facilitated the most empowering experience of my life so far–the home-birth of my second child. Flame taught me how to care for myself, how to access–and respect!–my body’s wisdom, and how to trust the wisdom and strength of my baby’s body. Possessing the selflessness of a shaman, she did both nothing and everything for me: at the prenatal and postnatal visits and most certainly during the birth, she listened, spoke and touched in ways that enabled ME to birth my baby with gentle power and surrender. I continue to take lessons in strength and humility when I think back on the months I spent with her. / When I was a girl, my body was taken from me by regular violation and humiliation. I learned to live outside my body in order to pretend that I wasn’t bleeding again, that I wasn’t crying and begging and scrambling to get away again. The hospital-birth of my first child placed me in an eerie, psychological proximity with those very early feelings of fear and shame–I felt raped, I feared rape, I trusted no one, I let no one know what I was feeling. In contrast, the home-birth of my second child put me somewhere else entirely–or lifted a veil and ushered in a whole new reality, one that includes my beautiful body and the commitment to living inside it with love and creativity. Flame embodies a feminist ethics of care and giving, and I am blessed to have known her.
